The speed at which Pokémon Go has spread is unprecedented. Less than a month after its release in the UK, the app has already been installed twice as many times as popular dating app, Tinder, it has double the engagement of Snapchat and is eclipsing Twitter in its percentage of daily active users. The app is also expected to surpass Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat download figures relatively soon. No wonder it is also touted to be the biggest game ever.
For those of you who don’t know, Pokémon Go is a reality game for smartphones, which makes use of your GPS and camera to turn the real world into a Pokémon hunting ground. The app has made countless fans, both young and old, suffer from a bad case of nostalgia.
It isn’t just Pokémon players who are seeing the benefits from the app. A lot of local businesses are also jumping on the band waggon. But just before we reveal how you and your business could possibly benefit from this new craze, we have to introduce you to the two most important parts of the game: PokéStops and Pokémon Gyms.
PokéStops are real-world locations and landmarks that Pokémon players can physically visit to acquire collectables and free accessories like PokéBalls. Pokémon Gyms are also real-world locations and landmarks but are used by players to train their Pokémon and battle other teams.
So the best way to see a distinguished growth in your business would be to get your location listed as a gym or PokéStop. Having said that, Niantic Labs, the creators of the game hasn’t reverted on how you can get your location listed.
For those of you lucky enough to have their business as a PokéStop, the first thing that you will want to do is set a lure down. Lures attract Pokémon to the location of the Pokéstop and therefore you will have a crowd of players around the PokéStop (and more importantly, your business). Setting up a lure is fairly straight forward, but you might have to buy them if you’re only playing the game for the business side of it as lures are normally unlocked through levelling your trainer up.
Most of us won’t be that lucky, therefore we have put together a few marketing ideas to get people to your shop, restaurant, cinema or whatever business you own.
A Social PokéHunt
Social media is very powerful. Why not advertise on social media that you are organising a PokéHunt? Although you don’t have a PokéStop at your business, you can still start and finish the hunt at your location. You could also host a PokéHunt after party, bringing all of the players into your business. This could work really well for bars and restaurants.
Being Near A Gym
Gyms are different to PokéStops as you can’t set lures down. So even if your business is a Pokémon Gym, you won’t be able to ‘lure’ players to your business. But you should see an increase in the amount of people loitering around your business. Therefore you need to figure out a way of getting them in your shop. There are a number of different ways that you can do this.
Giveaways: Order some Pokémon styled giveaways. There are a number of new businesses that have recently popped up due to the popularity of the game. Pokémon badges work really well and a quick Google search “Pokémon Gym badge” should point you in the right direction
Keeping Score: Alternatively, you could keep track of what team has control over your nearest gym and offer discount to those who belong to that team. Probably a good idea to ask for proof.
Wearing your colours: You could also offer a discount to any team members that proudly wear their colours. There are three teams; Team Mystic (Blue), Team Instinct (Yellow) and Team Valor (Red). Ask what team that they are on and then for them to show you their colours!
Get Social: Social media is going to be very important if you want this to be successful for your business. Use hashtags such as #pokemongo. Ask what team that they are on and then for them to show you their colours!
On The Move: If you’re not near a gym, why not take your business to the gym, this works perfectly for cafes and restaurants as you can easily take sandwiches or beverages down to the gym
