It never seems to take long before a new innovation in social media exploded onto the scene, and “Periscope” is no exception. The smartphone app owned by Twitter has only been available since March 2015, yet boasts 10 million registered and 2 million daily active users. But what is it?
Periscope – Digital Marketing Tips
Periscope is a live video streaming app for iOS and Android smartphones. The advertising strapline suggests that you “see the world through somebody else’s eyes”, which tells you what it does in a nutshell.
Any registered user can begin a broadcast using their phone at any time, and anyone can tune into that broadcast using a wifi or 4G network. Snapchat offers something similar, in that it allows users to upload and view short video clips, but Periscope takes it that one step further by allowing real-time broadcasts from literally anywhere in the world!
Digital marketing tips for your business
Periscope has huge appeal to the selfie generation allowing them to indulge to a greater extent than ever before, but as with all new innovations in social media it’s worth taking a step back and seeing how these things can work for you and your business. 2 million daily users and growing is a marketplace worth investigating, and live broadcast could be a good way to demonstrate what you do.
For any entertainment businesses, the uses are obvious. You can now broadcast your live music act, nightclub, DJ set, musical, theatre performance, stand-up comedy set (etc etc) to any and all prospective viewers. Any business that takes pride in its product can use Periscope to demonstrate the creative process they take great pride in, bloggers just got handed a great way to engage with people in real-time, as have people running training courses, or baby classes, or exercise groups… the potential uses are endless.
You may break into a market that your competitors haven’t discovered!
When a new platform comes along, it’s worthwhile figuring out what it enables you to do that you maybe couldn’t before. If you figure that out before rival companies, then you may just break into a market that they haven’t discovered. That’s surely not worth missing.
