We caught up with 3 local cyclists to ask about their latest ride

Lovely quiet roads that lead into beautiful Oundle, just enough elevation to make it interesting and enough downhills to make it exciting. Add in the bonus of amazing coffee and cake at the legendary Beans Café and what’s not to like?

I decided to take on the challenge of riding from St Ives to Newcastle. It went on forever!

A route I like to do after work during late spring and summer, heading straight out from the Office In St.Ives Town Centre at just gone 5pm, out along the low road through the back of Fenstanton crossing the new A14 into the back of the village of Hilton cross the B1040 at the Duck pond and head towards the A1198. Find a gap in the traffic and cross the A1198 head towards Graveley on the quite smooth tarmacked road, straight on through Graveley up the hill and straight on towards the Offords. Once in Offord Cluny turn right on the B1043 left at the old Swan Pub where if the barriers are down you can do a bit of train spotting before crossing the railway line and the river Ouse before heading into Buckden passed the Marina, once in the village of Buckden turn left on the High St passed the George Hotel and the Vine (at this point you really fancy a pint) and then use the foot tunnel to go under the A1 (if you are a pro you can jig round the bars without un- cleating) head out towards Perry on the B661 turn right at the first Grafham Water sign passed the Water/Cycle centre and into the village, take a right turn and take the single track road down into Brampton. Out on to Huntingdon Road up passed Hinchingbrook School and the station round the ring road onto Hartford passing the KOB and Barley Mow (more pint tempting) onto the A1123 to Houghton at this point depending on the old legs you can go through the village (2 more great pubs) through the thicket and home or as I do to burn off a few more calories drop into a low gear and head up Houghton Hill back into our beautiful Town of St.Ives. 1hr 45 minutes later your destressed from work, back home at a reasonable time to enjoy your evening and maybe just maybe that well deserved Beer.
